Elephant Adoption Scheme Launched in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, MP

Indeed a very Awesome news coming through for all animal lovers. Madhya Pradesh Government announced that the elephants can now be adopted for a day, a week, a month or a year.

The Forest department of Madhya Pradesh has now launched a scheme for wildlife lovers. According to the scheme now wild life lovers can adopt old and retired elephants which have given joyrides for almost five decades in Bandhavgarh Tiger reserve.

Forest officilas stated that – In the very kind and generous initiative by the MP state’s forest department, two elephants naming 74-year-old Gautam and 69-year-old Toofan in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve are being given for adoption to wildlife lovers with 13 other highly domesticated elephants.

Principal chief conservator of forest wildlife Mr Alok Kumar further stated – that this initiative has been taken inorder to reconnect tourists and wildlife lovers with the elephants, which are very popular among people for joy rides during sightseeing, generating funds for their maintenance has been hit very badly due to the lockdown and Covid-19 pandemic in the state.

He added that In order to bear medical and food expenses for them, the wildlife conservators/ lovers can adopt an elephant for Rs 500 for a day to Rs 1.50 lakh for a year.

The wildlife lovers, who will opt for monthly and yearly adoption plans, will be getting a chance to participate in elephant rejuvenation programme camp, which is held annually in September at Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. This camp is usually celebrated as a holiday for elephants. In this camp people can feed the animals and can actually spend time with them for learning more about elephants.

Director of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve Mr Vincet Raheem stated that – The Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is the worst affected due to the intrusion of at least 35 wild elephants from Chhattisgarh. The visitors are mainly concerned about the presence of wild elephants for more than a year but this adoption programme will enhance the connection with 15 special elephants and reduce their concern.

This is actually more of public awareness for the wild animals especially in view of the presence of wild elephants in this area.

The officials also stated that they are also conducting special training programmes in the reserve area specially for forest guards, guides and villagers. With a motive to expalin them – on how to deal with wild elephants and how to pacify the animals without hurting them.

This tranning prgramme will end in the presence of experts before the opening for tiger reserve for tourist, which is lately by 1st october 2020.
